Reducing Carbon Footprints in the Steel Industry with Opta’s Innovative Products

As an important, widely used engineering and construction material, steel is present throughout various aspects of our lives. Not surprisingly, steelmaking is highly carbon intensive, resulting in 1.8 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions for every ton of steel produced.

Accounting for roughly 8 percent of global CO₂ emissions, the steel industry ranks among the top three producers of carbon dioxide. As a result, steelmakers are increasingly confronting the challenge of decarbonizing their operations. Industry leaders recognize the need to reduce their carbon footprints and protect the global environment.

In response to customer demands for carbon-friendly products, manufacturers are striving to eliminate carbon emissions from their supply chains. Furthermore, tightening carbon emission regulations include reduced CO₂ targets and rising emission prices. And investors are exhibiting a growing interest in sustainability.

Opta products include insulators and slag conditioners that empower our customers to reduce their energy consumption and mitigate CO₂ emissions effectively. We take pride that over 28 percent of Opta Group Products comprise Non-Virgin Material, emphasizing our commitment to sustainability. By incorporating recycled components into several of our products, we actively contribute to lowering Opta’s environmental impact and promoting waste minimization.

The results of one of Opta’s insulators on temperature losses

In steelmaking, processing heating is responsible for as much as 63 percent of the plant’s energy drain. By minimizing temperature losses throughout critical steelmaking steps, Opta insulators and slag conditioners aid in reducing energy usage for this significant CO₂ emitting process by as much as 29 percent.

Dust Buster Challenge

We tasked our North American sites with locating and eliminating all environmental leaks, such as loose valves, small pipe holes, rattling guards, and old fittings throughout their facilities. As a result, we reduced product loss, unnecessary noise, and unwanted dust emissions.

All Clean Initiative

Opta facilities are clearing and recycling unused, scrapped, and discontinued products from their sites. Multiple ongoing upgrades are underway to reduce air emissions during production, loading, and unloading.

ResponsibleSteel is the steel industry’s first global, multi-stakeholder standard and certification initiative. By joining ResponsibleSteel in 2022, Opta Group took a significant step towards becoming an integral part of sustainable steel.

At Opta, all employees are responsible and accountable for the successful implementation of our environmental policies.
