Opta is your one source for blast cleaning products, including slags, mineral-based abrasives, metal-based abrasives, and organic abrasives, as well as a complete line of blast cleaning equipment and supplies.
Referred to as “the clay of 1000 uses,” Bentonite consumers include factories, well drillers, iron ore manufacturers, and producers of kitty-litter.
Brightsphere reflective road beads—used for road-marking paints and thermoplastic road marking materials—provide excellent retro-reflective performance and durability. Britesphere beads are consistent in quality and composition. Strict quality control guarantees truly round glass beads for optimum reflection. Britesphere beads are available in various coatings to ensure flotation and adhesion or to resist agglomeration.
Garnet, the most popular abrasive used in waterjet cutting, has proven to be the best option for this application. Opta mines and supplies two brands of garnet for use in waterjet machines.
International Garnet is a by-product of a mineral process. In our state-of-the-art facilities in Keeseville, New York, and Waterdown, Ontario, the garnet is crushed, screened, and packaged according to our customers’ requests.
Opta mines Wesjet Garnet from creek beddings in the Fernwood, Idaho area. Washed with fresh water in a cutting edge washing facility, Wesjet is one of the cleanest abrasives for waterjet cutting.

International Garnet is a high-density garnet used in municipal and industrial water filtration systems.
Recommended as a support for other materials, such as sand and anthracite, Emerald Creek Garnet’s high hardness reduces erosion and provides years of reliable service.
Made of 100 percent crushed recycled glass, Filtr-O-Verre has higher filtration power (filtration level) than sand and improves water clarity. The coarse, angular material is useful in trapping dirt and impurities in the filter.
We process and distribute industrial mineral products to the foundry industry, including bentonite clays used for binders in the foundry molding industry. This segment also sources and distributes a full offering of resin-coated sands, riser sleeves, and feeding aids.
Molten metals appear in various applications, either as part of the steelmaking process itself or in manufactured goods. While still in liquid form, molten metals get refined and processed according to the chemical and metallurgical specifications that determine their final characteristics.
We apply our knowledge in producing products for treating steel toward other metallurgical processes as well. Opta offers solutions for the treatment of liquid metals in a variety of foundry applications.

Bentonite, Carsins, and Premix 46-B
Foundries use Bentonite when pouring metal cast molds. The clay withstands higher temperatures, and excessive heat will not cause it to lose its chemical structure. Iron ore manufacturers add Bentonite to crushed taconite to form pellets for transport to steel mills. Opta stocks the Western sodium and Southern calcium types of Bentonite.
Carsin is a blend of various carbonaceous materials with remarkable potency for developing a high-level lustrous carbon. Penetration of molding sand by molten metal can produce defects commonly referred to as “Burn On” or “Burn In.” The addition of Carsin to the sand helps produce properly balanced molding sand and castings with good, clean finishes. Carsin reduces cleaning work and improves casting machinability.
Recommended additions of PREMIX 46-B for new sand is 7 to 9 percent based on the sand weight. The higher level additions are for fines sands of AFS grain fineness number greater than 80 and production of more massive castings. Water requirements are 2.5 to 3.5 percent based on total sand weight. The variation in water requirements relates to the fineness of the base sand and the percentage of bond used.
